What are Energy Credits Actually for?

Know it's a silly question, but I'm honestly curious. I have amassed a large sum, but I don't want to spend days shopping among 158 different vendors when most of the stuff I get in drops is more valuable. I don't want to spend half an hour hunting the exchange for the occassional reasonably priced item. I do see a few things that I want, but they all require badges of exploration. It's getting to the point where I just don't care how much Star Trek money I have.
